FROM THE MTNS TO THE SEA (JAN. '05)

One of the beautiful things of Albania is the contrast of beautiful mountain tops and the Adriadic Sea. One can travel from the top of a mountain to the sea within a very short time.

This particular day I took my good friend Tani Baraku for a ride. We had been experiencing very cold wintery weather but this Sunday afternoon was unbarably beautiful. We ask some local taxi drivers about the condition of local mountain pass because we were concerned about riding the motorcyle over the moutain and running into snow. They said it was clear so we went for it. We bundled up and within an hour were on top of the mountain range just before the city of Elbasan (the next largest city south of Tirane). It was extremely cold and windy and still snow-covered from the large snow storm that just passed, but the roads were bone-dry and clear. We didn't stay long at the time at the top because of the cold and continued on our loop around to the Sea. Within another hour we had gone from a snow covered mountain top to the moderate and sunny weather in the port city of Durres. We stopped there for a nice fish lunch before making the 30 minute ride from Durres back to Tirane.
